Principal’s Blog

You may be aware there has been uncertainty about whether Girls at the Centre would be able to continue at the school. This is due to the NT Government’s policy of only having one girls program per school. You may recall, however, that previously Girls at the Centre was granted an extension until the end of this year.

As of the end of the school year, the Girls at the Centre program will cease running. This has been an extremely difficult decision for The Smith Family and one that we have not taken lightly. We have informed the school, the staff and the girls today.

As a not-for-profit organisation, The Smith Family is dependent on government support, grants and donations to deliver much of our program work. Without a secure, long-term commitment to the program from the NT Government, we are unable to keep Girls at the Centre running in Alice Springs.

The Smith Family, and myself personally, are both sad and disappointed that we have had to make this decision after more than seven years. We are all very proud of what we have achieved through the program and the wonderful outcomes for the girls and families who have participated.

Girls at the Centre has been an important program for The Smith Family. We will make sure that all of the good practice and valuable work we have done together will not be lost as other states are now taking an interest in running the program.

I look forward to answering any of your questions tonight. However, if you can’t attend the meeting and have questions you would like to ask, please talk to our staff, or don’t hesitate to contact me on 0407 988 882.

Those of you who have daughters in Year 8 and Year 9 in 2016 should know that we are working closely with the school and the Centralian Girls Academy to develop a transition process for those who wish to move to the other program at the school.

I would also like to thank you for your support over the years. Without the support of parents and community members, we could not have achieved our positive outcomes for Alice Springs girls.

Yours sincerely

Graham Jaeschke,
General Manager NT

Playground Changes

We have made a few changes to the out of bounds areas during break times around the school.

To encourage use of the facilities at the rear of the school, students may no longer meet at the front of the school during break times.

We have been the watering back oval which is now looking very green. Students are able to sit in the green part of the oval (no further west than the peppercorn tree). This now allows students to use the goal posts.

Library

The library will be closed at lunch and recess commencing Week 2.

Summer Garden
