Our last day of Term 1 was an opportunity to celebrate Harmony Day with the theme ‘Everyone Belongs’. We plan to celebrate NAIDOC at the end of this term. Such celebrations are important opportunities for students and staff to share their identity and culture while also learning about others.
We had a wonderful cross country carnival at the Telegraph Station on Friday 26th April. The weather was perfect and it is always a pleasure to be outside, seeing our young people shine in different ways. On Friday, 3rd April, we will hold our athletics carnival at the Head Street Oval. Please be aware that we cannot take students on excursions including these whole school events, without parent/family consent. You can support your young people by returning consent forms to school.
CMS hopes to start a LEaD Committee (Local Engagement and Decision-making), similar to the old ASSPA committee. This will be another way for Aboriginal families to have a voice and suggest ways we can work together for better educational outcomes for all our young people.
CMS LEaD Committee Meeting
- Thursday 9th May, 5-6 pm
- CMS Library
- Supper provided
- Please RSVP to Leigh Stanton, Rachel Abbott or Gordon Mallard (89552333) or just come!
Regular school attendance supports student wellbeing and achievement. In week 1, we ran a raffle for students with 100% attendance. Congratulations to the luck winners:
Year 7 – Kalem Chisholm
Year 8 – Kevin Pollard
Year 9 – Jarred Ryan
At the end of this term, families will receive reports with information about students’ participation at school, their effort and letter grades for subjects. Thank you for encouraging attendance and effort. We know that families are the first teachers, and school success comes from us working together.

AusEarthEd Warming Oceans
Recently we had a visit from Australian Earth Science Education (AusEarthEd). The students took part in some hands-on activities and learned about our Earth, volcanoes and the carbon cycle in our oceans. Thanks to AusEarthEd and their NT GeoSTEM supporter, Santos, for an exciting incursion.
Duke of Edinburgh
Since the start of the year CMS has been running the Duke of Edingburgh program during year 9 contact time. Students most recently attended the "Roll, Ride or Walk Colour Smash" hosted by the Heart Foundation where they participated in the events of the day and built connections.
Anzac Day
Students and staff from Stars, along with Adam Duncum and Mrs. McCarthy represented CMS in the ANZAC Day parade last week. Clontarf students from CMS then attended the 10:30am service at ANZAC Hill. All students are commended for their dedication and respect for those who served and died in international wars and peacekeeping operations.
Cross Country
CMS held our annual Cross Country event last week at Head Street Oval. A great time was had by all students and staff in attendance.
The winners were as below - we look forward to students representing CMS at the Interschool Athletics competion in the future.
1st – 3rd for each year/gender:
Year 9: Tarynt Stubbs, Jacob Briggs, Charley Atanacio/Kaitlyn Walters, Tanieshia Payne, Chloe Hildebrandt
Year 8: Rowan Cole, Emmanuel Rudolf, Mitchell Liddle / Anahera Hereora, Layla Presley, Jasmin Nelson
Year 7: Herbie Goodwin, Nathan Franks-Watts, Blake Clement-Strawbridge/Nesia Ford-Wineera, Azarah Rioli, Halava Wulf
Year 7 Contact Time
In year 7 contact time we have been studying photography and learning about different camera angles and settings on our cameras. The photography contact time group have learnt how to take self portraits and working to a brief set out by a client. Our latest brief was to take architectural shots around the school that could be used to promote our space. Keep an eye out in future newsletters for their edited images.
Year 8 Photography
Students in 8.7 have been learning photography this term, taking on many photography challenges around the school. Some of their image challenges have included capturing photos of animals, paper, the colour blue and a self portrait. 8.7 were also challenged to find interesting architecture around the school. They have learnt to import their photos onto the school computers and create a video of their images. Part of this process involved giving each image an appropriate name and editing the photo.
Attendance Awards
To acknowledge the attendance efforts of students this term, each year level held a raffle for students with 100% attendance for the first week back at school. An exemplary effort from students who achieved this and a big congratulations to the winners pictured below. A great start to term 2!

Harmony Day
Harmony Day is traditionally observed on the 21 March each year, in acknowledgement of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. At CMS this year, we held Harmony Day on the final day of term. This was a way to celebrate the diversity of our community, an opportunity to come together to make merry at the end of Term 1, and a chance to affirm the 2024 Harmony Day theme: Everyone Belongs.

STARS Update
The start of term 2 has been super busy with all types of activities! Week 1 kicked off with a welcome back pancake breakfast for our Stars students.

In week 3, during contact times, the Year 9 students showcased their creativity in a fruit-themed cake decorating competition, while our artistic Year 8 students created some wonderful looking signs for their house teams for the upcoming 2024 Athletics Carnival.
AFL trainings on Thursdays at lunchtime have commenced to gear up for some thrilling matches against St Phillips College which will be held most Friday afternoons starting from next week.
Stay tuned for more exciting events this term!

School Expectations
A reminder about our school expectations :
Textas, sharpies and markers only in classrooms and school bags
Part of our School Wide Positive Behaviour expectations include students respecting each other and school property. Cleaners and maintenance staff have had a lot of graffiti to clean and repaint recently. For this reason, we will now ask students to use textas, sharpies and markers in the classroom only or keep them in their bags. Students with these objects in their hand outside the classroom are expected to hand them over to a staff member.
Phone policy
The NT Department of Education phone policy is that student phones must be away and silent between 8:30 and 3:00.
CMS will be introducing phone lockers this term. Students will be able to give their phone to a school leader in the year level for the day so it can be safe, on charge and out of reach.
If staff have evidence that students are using their phones for antisocial activity (bullying etc.), we will ask for family support to ensure that their phone is not brought to school, or at least not used at all during the school day. This will help create a safe school where students can focus on learning.
Most students who have a phone follow school expectations for this policy. We are grateful for all those who follow CMS school values of being respectful, responsible and fair.
